Xiaomi revolutionized the smartphone market when it introduced The original Mix in 2016. It pushed the trend for bezel-less displays forward. It began a trend of moving the front camera to the bottom chin in order to form an illusion of a bezel-less display. The handset also was the first smartphone to break away from the norm at the time 16:9 aspect ratio. It started the trend for phones with tall and minimal displays. The last device from the lineup, the Mi MIX 3 came up with a very innovative manual sliding design. With more brands demonstrating their abilities to create “bezel-free” smartphones Xiaomi had to implement new technology to assure that the Mi MIX 3 would withstand as bezel-less smartphones against its competitor. However, since most modern phones are bezel-less today, the MIX series lost its attraction. Today, Xiaomi is bringing back, after lots of teasers, its MIX lineup back to life! As expected, the brand’s first foldable smartphone is part of the Mi MIX series. It will arrive on the market soon as Mi Mix Fold.

The Mix series is recognized for delivering innovative concepts, and we’re happy to learn that the Mi Mix Fold isn’t coming simply as a foldable smartphone. It’s jammed with lots of innovative features. Samsung will want to prepare, after all, the race in the folding-phone segment is getting warm.

The mi mix fold has an inward folding mechanism like the Huawei mate x2 & the Samsung galaxy z fold 2. It is wrapped in corning gorilla glass 5 but has a unique ceramic edition with a textured rear. This special edition also has a gold-made middle frame and volume keys and a special laser engraving on the rear.

Xiaomi has gone for a 4:3 aspect ratio for the interior display while the outer display features a 27:9 aspect ratio, thus giving the phone in its folded position an elongated form factor similar to some Sony phones. This outer display also has a punch hole cutout at the top left corner of the panel for a camera for video calls and selfies.

For the rear design, Xiaomi has adjusted the design of the Mi 10 Ultra. Rather than an elongated camera module, it is much smaller but wider and protrudes but not as much as the Mi 11 Ultra.

The inner foldable display of the MIX Fold is an 8.01-inch WQHD+ AMOLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio. That additional 0.1 inch makes it the foldable phone with the largest main display as it is just a little bit larger than the Huawei Mate X2’s 8-inch display. Xiaomi’s main foldable display is also the first to support Dolby Vision.

There are no punch holes or notches on the main inner display neither does it support a high refresh rate like the Huawei Mate X2 & the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. The 10 bit, 1 billion color display has a JNCD value and Delta E value of 0.29 and 0.35 respectively,  DCI-P3 color gamut, and a 4,300,000:1 color contrast ratio.
The outer panel is a 6.52-inch AMOLED (2520 x 840) HD+ display with support for a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate. It has a 27:9 aspect ratio, a peak brightness of 900 nits, and HDR10+. Xiaomi states both displays utilize an in-house algorithm to generate images and videos in super-resolution. They are capable of increasing the resolution of images from 720p to 1440p and the resolution of videos from 480p to 1440p.

Along with the Snapdragon 888 chipset, you get up to 16GB of LPPDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. There is no microSD storage expansion, so what you buy is what you are stuck with. There is a butterfly-style cooling mechanism that utilizes a combination of large-area Vapor Chamber liquid cooling, thermal paste, and various layers of graphite sheets for heat emission.

Just like the Mi 11 family (except the Mi 11 Lite), the Mi MIX Fold has Harman Kardon tuned stereo speakers. There are four speakers – two on each side of the display and they are said to be 40% more powerful than the Mi 10 Pro thanks to a 15V Smart PA. The speakers can also produce a 3D spatial audio experience utilizing Xiaomi’s own quad-speaker array algorithm.

The Mi MIX Fold features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that also works as the power button. Mi Mix Fold also comes with features like NFC, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 with support for AAC, LDAC, and LHDC.

The Mi MIX Fold carries a 5020mAh battery (dual battery configuration– 2460mAh + 2560mAh), the largest in a foldable phone, and also supports 67W fast wired charging, the fastest on a foldable phone. Xiaomi states users will be able to charge the phone from 0 to 100 in just 37 minutes. It also supports Quick Charge 5+ and Power Delivery 3.0 but doesn’t carry wireless charging support.

Xiaomi ships the Mi MIX Fold with MIUI 12 on top of Android 10 (that is what the spec sheet says) and it has features that make using it easy and intuitive. You can run various apps at the same time side-by-side, drag and drop content from one app to another, use a parallel windows mode, and also switch to a desktop mode.

The Mi MIX Fold features three rear cameras. The primary camera is a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor with a 7P lens. Below it is an 8MP camera with a liquid lens that enables it to double as a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom and also as a macro shooter with a focus distance of 3cm. The third shooter is a 123° 13MP f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle camera. The outer display is home to a 20MP front camera.

The Surge C1  ISP (Image Sensing Processor) provides an upgraded 3A algorithm and low-light focus abilities that result in more precise autofocus, autoexposure, and auto white balance. Xiaomi states the chip produces exceptionally high-performance results while using low CPU and storage space.

The Mi MIX Fold will be available in three variants at the following prices: The 12GB RAM + 256GB variant is priced at 9999 RMB (~$1521) and a 12GB RAM + 512GB variant features a price tag of 10999 RMB (~$1673) price tag. The Ceramic Special Edition which has 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage is 12,999 RMB (~$1976).

All variants will go on sale from April 16 in China. No word on global launch yet.
