SMARTPHONES EQUIPPED WITH AMOLED PANEL WILL TAKE 39% OF THE SMARTPHONE MARKET THIS YEAR



According to the latest analysis by the analytical firm TrendForce, the percentage of smartphones equipped with AMOLED screens will reach 39% of the entire shipment in 2021. For comparison: in 2020, it was 33%, and in 2019, it was 31%.

If this forecast turns out to be accurate, the share of handsets with AMOLED display will be larger than the share of not only handsets with liquid crystal displays on amorphous silicon (a-Si), but also handsets with liquid crystal displays produced using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LPTS) technology.

TrendForce points out that manufacturers will be actively buying smartphone components throughout 2021 for two reasons.

First, the industry as a whole anticipates the demand for smartphones to grow significantly this year.

Second, manufacturing capacity throughout the semiconductor supply chain is full, following in critical shortages in some segments. This inspires clients, including smartphone manufacturers, to stock up on some components to decrease the potential risk of shortages.


IDC: THE SMARTPHONE MARKET is growing again

Specialists of the analytical firm IDC summed up the results of the 4th quarter of 2020 and the entire year in general on the smartphone market. As said in the corresponding report, the smartphone market rebounded to growth. Sales in the 4th quarter of 2020 were 385.9 million units; which is 4.3% higher than smartphones sold in the 4th quarter of 2019. At the same time, for the whole of 2020, smartphones were sold 5.9% less than in 2019.

At the end of the 4th quarter of 2020, Apple was dubbed as the market leader. It was able to boost sales in annual terms; that is, in comparison with the 4th quarter of the previous year, by 22.2%, from 73.8 to 90.1 million devices. This led to a surge in Apple’s share from 19.9%   to 23.4%. The second position is held by Samsung, which in annual terms boost sales by 6.2%, as a result of which its share grew from 18.8% to 19.1%. The third-place goes to Xiaomi. Its share grew from 8.9% to 11.2%. The top five also add Oppo and Huawei. Also, The share of Oppo grew from 8.3% to 8.8%. The share of Huawei contracted from 15.2% to 8.4%.

As for 2020 as a whole, Samsung continued to be the leader with 20.6% of the market share. Apple is in the second spot with 15.9%. The share of Huawei, which is in the third position at the end of 2020, is 14.6%. The fourth-place goes to Xiaomi, whose share is 11.4%, the fifth spot goes to Vivo, whose share is 8.6%. In 2019, Samsung’s share was 21.6%, Apple’s 13.9%. Huawei – 17.5%, Xiaomi – 9.2%, Vivo – 8.0%.
